Different Types of Winter Wiper Blades Available

Different Types of Winter Wiper Blades Available

By Ron Haugen

Winter wiper blades are inexpensive, and should be put on cars before cold, snowy weather moves in. The winter blades are designed specifically for harsher conditions. They are able to move ice and snow more easily, making it safer for you to drive in winter weather. There are several types of winter blades available. Here's a quick look at a few of them and the differences and advantages to each.

Silicone Blades

A silicone blade will use a wiping surface made of silicone rather than rubber. Silicone can withstand colder temperatures without freezing and cracking as rubber can. The silicone surface will provide a clearer field of vision during times of freezing rain or snow. They also last much longer than rubber blades, and many are available with lifetime guarantees. You may pay extra out of pocket when you purchase these, but you'll save money in the long run. At the end of the season you can remove them and store them for use again the next year.

Vibrating Wiper Blades

Vibrating wiper blades, or shaker blades, use a vibrating motion while wiping the vision area. This helps to remove snow or ice that can accumulate under the blade. When snow or ice builds up on the blade, the vision field can become obscured, making driving more dangerous. These can be used at any time of the year as well to clear leaves and other debris that can become lodged under the blade. These aren't considered disposable. Some models offer replacement rubber strips instead of full blade replacement. These will cost more than standard blades, and you may end up needing to pay for installation as well. If you choose to only use these during the winter, you may also have to pay to have them removed for storage.

Heated Blades

Heated wiper blades are becoming more popular as a standard feature on new vehicles. These include a heating element inside the rubber strip of the blade. This is nice to melt ice or snow as it builds up. The driver is able to turn the heater on and off as needed. This isn't typically going to be easy to install, and will need to be done professionally because of the wiring involved. However, many people still opt for these since it makes it much easier to defrost a window in on a cold morning and makes it safer for driving in sleet and snow.

Maintenance

You will get the most out of your winter blades with some basic maintenance. Use a washer solution that will not freeze. This is easy to find, most big box retailers and auto parts stores will carry these solutions. Keep your blades clean, and always return them to the off position before turning off the car. This will help if they become frozen overnight, as you won't burn out the motor in the morning while trying to heat up your vehicle.

Engine Block Heaters Compared

Engine Block Heaters Compared

By Ron Haugen

Engine block heaters
are commonly used in areas that experience bitterly cold winters. Starting a cold engine can prove to be troublesome, and can eventually create unneeded wear and tear on the engine block. These are easy to find in all parts of the country, and can be purchased at any auto parts retailer. While it's not necessary to have these, it's a good idea in certain areas of the country.

What They Are

An engine block heater is connected to a standard AC plug on one end and fed through the grill of the vehicle on the other end. The idea is these heaters will keep the coolant warm, so it will start easily in the morning. This not only helps to maintain your car in the winter, it can reduce pollution by shortening the amount of time the engine runs roughly before the fuel is warmed up enough to fire correctly. There are several types of heaters available to keep your vehicle warm overnight.

Dipstick Heaters

A dipstick heater is placed where the dipstick would normally be. This keeps the oil warm. This will prevent the oil from getting thick and sludging up in extremely cold weather. These are very effective and inexpensive. Anyone can install these without much help.

Radiator Heaters

Radiator hose heaters aren't as common as the other types of heaters, but they are nonetheless effective. These are spliced into the top radiator hose, heating the coolant from here. These are the easiest to install, requiring only a screwdriver and access to the hoses.

Block Heaters

These are the most effective types of heaters available, but they tend to be expensive as well when compared to other types of heaters. Even with this in mind, some heaters can be found for under $50. These plug in directly to the engine block and keeps the coolant and the oil warm. These are made for specific car models, but they can be found or ordered online or at any auto parts store. Installation is a little tricky with these, but again can be done with some time and a few tools.

Heater Blankets

For those who live in areas that do experience cold temperatures, but not often, a heater blanket may be a good alternative to some of the other types of heaters. These work in a fashion very similar to a standard electric blanket, except they are made to be used in harsh conditions. These will plug in to a standard wall outlet, and you just place them over the engine block of your vehicle. They will keep the engine, oil and fluid warm during the overnight hours.

Ethanol Fuel - Understanding the Hype

Ethanol Fuel - Understanding the Hype

By Ron Haugen

Ethanol fuel is becoming a popular alternative for standard fuel. As more people start to look towards green living, making the switch to ethanol seems like a good choice.

What it Is

Ethanol is a fuel that is created from renewable resources, such as corn, switch grass, sugar cane, and a few other crops. Any crop that is carbon based can be used, making it easy to make regardless of the region you are living in. It is mixed with gasoline to power a gas powered engine.

Conversion Kits

Conversion kits are available all over the internet. These kits will allow you to use ethanol fuel in any vehicle. They are difficult to install, but with some time and the right instructions you can do this yourself. There are also companies that specialize in converting vehicles to alternative fuels as well if you decide to use a professional. Purchasing these kits will vary in price depending on the type of car you have, but generally run around $400. Some car models can be as low as $200 while others can be as high as $600.

Finding Ethanol Fuel

Ethanol fuel requires different storage than standard fuel. Many stations that carry ethanol fuel will mix it at the station, which lowers the cost. For those stations that are smaller though, this can create a problem. Trucking ethanol that is premixed is expensive. Because of these considerations ethanol fuel isn't something that is available everywhere. You can find station locations online. There are several websites devoted to mapping out the locations across the country.

Advantages of Ethanol

Ethanol is great for the environment, but it's also good for local communities. Since several crops can be used, using these crops for the production of ethanol fuel will help support local farmers, which can make a stronger community.

Ethanol can be produced in America, lowering our Independence on foreign oil suppliers.

Ethanol is completely renewable, which means it won't strain our natural resources. It is also perfectly safe to use in any vehicle with simple modifications.

Disadvantages of Ethanol

While ethanol has many advantages, it has a few disadvantages as well. Producing ethanol is a costly process, and that cost is passed on to consumers. A gallon of E85 fuel will be more than a gallon of standard gasoline.

Ethanol also burns at a higher rate than fuel, meaning less distance on a gallon as opposed to gasoline.

Because ethanol is produced from crops, space is needed to cultivate the crops. Since most crops are used for human consumption, many farmers are reluctant to waste valuable space on a crop that won't nourish people. It also is less desirable because of the costs associated. Even though ethanol is renewable, the waste produced as a result of making ethanol is toxic. Research costs money, and there is much research still needed on how to use ethanol effectively on a regular basis.

How to Change Spark Plugs

How to Change Spark Plugs

By Ron Haugen

You will find that spark plugs are very important when it comes to keeping your car running. They need to be not only changed periodically but taken care of and kept clean. Make sure that you know when they need to be replaced and what you need to do in order to replace them so that you can keep your car running as smoothly as possible for as long as possible. Changing your spark plugs is something that is very easy to do and can end up being extremely beneficial to the running of your vehicle.

Spark Plug Location

The first thing that you are going to need to do is know where exactly the spark plugs are. You will need to open up the hood of your vehicle and then pull on the release catch that will be on the inside of your vehicle. This will allow you to open it. Once you have successfully opened the hood of your vehicle, you are ready to find the spark plugs. If you have an engine that is a 4 cylinder, then they will be on top of your engine block where the cylinders will be upright along a line. If working on a V engine, then they are going to be in 2 different rows sitting at an angle. HT leads will cover the spark plugs so that they cannot be easily seen. Your manufacturer's handbook will be able to provide you with the exact location if you can't easily locate them.

HT Leads

It is important that you understand what order that your HT leads are in. they are made so that they can fire on your cylinders in a very specific order so that your vehicle can run properly. Whenever you are getting your leads replaced, you will need to make sure that they go along with the right spark plug. You will need to make sure that you always start with the lead that is on the right side first. Once the HT lead has been pulled off, then remove your spark plug where it will be exposed. A socket as well as a wrench will be necessary for removal.

Inspection

Once you have removed the spark plug, inspect it thoroughly. Clean the dirt off of it and make sure that the gap that is at the base of it is the right size. The size that the gap should be will have a lot to do with the make and the model of your vehicle. Make sure that you know the right size of it before determining if it needs to be replaced. A gapping tool or a feeler gage will be able to set the necessary gap for you.

Thread

Whenever you are screwing the spark plug back into place, make sure that it is threaded properly. This is something that can be very difficult and expensive to have to repair if it is not threaded the way that it should be. Over tightening can also be something that can damage your thread.

Heated Seats, Air Conditioned Seats, and More

Heated Seats, Air Conditioned Seats, and More

By Ron Haugen

The seats in our vehicles used to be incredibly simple and incredibly easy to use. They simply moved forward and backward, allowing you to adjust to fit in the vehicle comfortable. Today's world has completely changed the way we view how we sit in a vehicle. Changes in technology have allowed for
incredible advancements that make our ride more enjoyable, more comfortable, and easier to manage.

While there are various changes that have been made to our seats, there are a few that stand out among the rest. These are some of the major changes that have come to the world of sitting in a vehicle.

Heated Seats

Heated seats are one of the best inventions, in terms of luxury, for recent vehicles. This invention is especially important for those who have leather seats in their vehicles. The heated seats work quickly, helping to heat up the entire seat, for both the back and the rear. It is something that can be controlled by individual seat, with some allowing for completely temperature control.

Air Conditioned Seats

Air conditioned seats follow the exact same principle as the heated seats. The air conditioned seats help to cool the entire chair down, and is especially important for those who have leather seats. There are simply small perforations in the seat that allow for air to go through the seat. There is cool air that is pushed through these perforations, creating air conditioned seats. These seats are also controlled individually, with some offering climate control.

Seat Settings

There are some vehicles that allow you to save settings for your seat. This means that when you get in your vehicle, you can simply sit in the seat and press a button. Your seat will automatically remember your preferences in terms of height, forward/backward motion, and lean. It will move the seat accordingly, giving you the exact seating position that you need.

This is perfect for family vehicles that are driven by multiple people. Each family member can create their own setting on the seat. They can then simply push their setting when they get in the vehicle. This eliminates the headache that many get when they get in the vehicle, only to find that someone has moved the seat. You can simply push a button and have your seat returned to your preferred setting.

Most of the things that are available for these seats are considered luxury items. We do not need to have heated seats and we do not need to have air conditioned seats. We simply want them because they make our ride more comfortable and more luxurious. While these options will eventually be standard on many vehicles, they continue to be luxury items for those willing to spend a little more. All of this seat technology helps to make your driving experience the best that it can be.

Everything You Need to Know Four Wheel Drive

Everything You Need to Know Four Wheel Drive

By Ron Haugen

Four Wheel Drive is something that many look for when they are looking to purchase a new vehicle. The power and control offered by these drives lead many to believe that the cars are safer on the roads in a bevy of conditions.

It is important for all to understand exactly what it can do in these conditions, and to understand both the positives and negatives of this form of vehicle. The more that you understand, the better you will be able to understand whether or not this is the right type of vehicle for you.

The system that you hear about with most vehicles is not a full four-wheel drive vehicle. The system is only a part-time four wheel drive system, giving you the benefits of four wheel drive when you need the benefits of control of all four wheels.

One of the major benefits that you will get from four wheel drive is traction. This means that the vehicle is going to be able to grip the road better than it would if it was only two wheel drive. All four of the tires are working individually, directing the vehicle. If the two front tires or two rear tires stop working, the other tires will be able to continue to grip on the road.

This makes it incredibly useful for those who will be driving in less-than-stellar road conditions. Snow, ice, sand, and gravel are just some of the conditions that can be somewhat tamed by a vehicle with this type of drive system.

With that being said, four-wheel drive is not just for larger vehicles or vehicles that are made for less-than-perfect road conditions. Some sports cars rely on this type of driving for performance. These vehicles can get more grip and traction on the road when they have four-wheel drive, allowing them to be more stable through turns at higher speeds. This helps to improve the acceleration abilities and steering of sports cars.

It is important to note that these vehicles are not perfect. They can still slip and slide in bad road conditions. You must be careful when driving in poor conditions no matter the vehicle type. They also require more power to operate. This can drastically reduce the miles per gallon that your car receives, costing you more in gas money.

While this is perfect for some situations, it is wrong for other situations. You need to fully understand the capabilities and limitations of this type of drive before you actually make a purchase. You simply need to work to understand how you would benefit from this form of driving. If you believe that the benefits far outweigh any of the potential negatives, this type of vehicle is the right vehicle for you.

Windshield Repair - Which Method Is Best?

Windshield Repair - Which Method Is Best?

By Ron Haugen

If you need to replace or repair a windshield, you will have several options. Some may be better than others, and it can be overwhelming deciding what to do. Leaving a cracked or chipped windshield untouched will end up causing more damage to the glass in the long run. It's best to have this fixed sooner rather than later. Here are some options to consider.

Complete Replacement

If you have insurance that will cover windshield repair with a low deductible, this may be a good option. Many companies that specialize in windshield repair will pay the deductible for you provided it's under $100. If you call ahead to make an appointment most of these companies can replace the windshield in less than an hour. If you don't make an appointment, you may have to wait a few hours if there are many customers in front of you.

Even without full coverage insurance, these companies are typically fairly inexpensive to work with. Just be sure they offer warranties, and check with the Better Business Bureau for complaints before you spend your hard earned money.

Chip Damage Repair

If you just have a small chip or small crack to deal with, you may not have to replace the entire windshield. A special epoxy resin can be used to fill in the crack or chip and strengthen the area around the chip. Once the resin dries the chip isn't noticeable anymore, although you may see a slight difference in the glass around the repair. This difference isn't typically enough to make a dangerous situation while driving. This type of repair is usually under $100. You may have to pay a little more if you choose a mobile repair option and the company comes to your location. Even so, it's cheaper than replacing the entire windshield.

Do It Yourself Kits

Those who want to save time and money may choose to repair small blemishes on their own using a repair kit. These can be purchased at any auto parts store or ordered online. In the kit you will find the epoxy resin and the tools to apply this. Care needs to be taken when using these, and the outdoor conditions must be warm and dry. After the repair is done the windshield will need to be able to cure in the sunlight for a few hours before maximum strength is achieved.

Advantages of Repair

Repairing a windshield has several benefits opposed to complete replacement. Repair is always going to be less expensive. Repairing a chip or crack also doesn't damage the watertight seal created in the factory windshield, replacing the windshield will require this seal to be broken. Secondary windshields tend to leak over time. Repairing a windshield is also much better for the environment since your windshield won't end up in a landfill somewhere.

The Importance of ASE Certified Mechanic

The Importance of ASE Certified Mechanics

By Ron Haugen

You will find that being able to have somebody that knows that they are doing with your vehicle definitely has its perks. It is common that people simply look for somebody that knows a little bit about cars to work on your so that you can save some money. If you find somebody that is not certified, then they typically will not charge you very little if any money. This is something that a lot of people do. This is something that sometimes works out okay but it is also something that can be putting you as well as your vehicle at risk.

Dangers

Just because somebody thinks that they know a few things about cars does not necessarily mean that they do. You will find that sometimes, if it is something simple, like an oil change or replacing spark plugs that you can usually do it on your own with the help of somebody. However, if it is something that requires more skill, such as replacing or rebuilding an alternator or an engine, then you should make sure that you have somebody that is certified. Somebody that is not certified may not have as much experience as they need to for the tasks at hand. This is something that can end up putting you in danger and costing you even more money in the long run as these alternators that they attempt to rebuild or put in can end up going out in just a matter of months.

Benefits

You will find that working with a mechanic that is ASE certified means that they have gone through an extensive amount of training. This means that they have been tested on all of the parts of the vehicle and how to fix them. You will not have to worry about them running into a problem that they are not familiar with unless it requires a specialist. These mechanics will have to retake their exams every so often to make sure that they are kept up to date on all of the latest technology. This means that a mechanic that became ASE certified 20 years ago will know how to work on your brand new vehicle. This is something that is especially necessary with all of the new computers that are put into vehicles today.

Considerations

It is no secret that you will end up spending some money on a mechanic if they are certified. This is something that is going to be necessary but is going to be worth it. You will need to simply shop and ask around and make sure that you go with somebody that you can trust. They are going to be able to provide you with the quality that you need at prices that you can afford. You will find that asking around will get you far in terms of people that know people. Just make sure that the people that you are put into touch with are certified before you go any further with them.

What Exactly Are Xenon Headlights?

What Exactly Are Xenon Headlights?

By Ron Haugen

You will be able to find Xenon headlights for just about any type of vehicle that you may have. Understanding what these are and what they do is important knowledge. There is no point in spending money on these if you don't need them. Using Xenon headlights without knowing what they are or their features can end up being something that you regret, either because you do not get the full effect of the headlights or because you did not get what you expected.

Xenon Gas

Basically, what a xenon headlight is is a headlight that is completely filled up with xenon gas. Xenon gas is is an odorless and a colorless gas that is found in the earth's atmosphere in small amounts. These types of headlights are very easy to tell apart from others because it has a specific type of sheen to it that is very neon like. It was not until 1898 that this gas was actually discovered. Since its discovery, this gas has been used in many different ways.

Xenon Headlight Creations

It is a complex process that xenon headlights are created. It is basically done through the separation of the air. The air is split into oxygen as well as nitrogen. It is the oxygen that is turned completely into a liquid. This liquid oxygen will have small amounts of krypton and xenon in it. It is through even further process that the xenon will then be contained so that it can be used to create just one entire xenon headlight.

Benefits

It is common for these types of headlights to be used more frequently than other headlights for several different reasons. One of the bigger reasons is the fact that they help to light up the darker roads better than the regular types of headlights. These types of headlights can be found in several different locations. Whether it is online or in auto parts stores, they are not difficult to come by. You do not have to have a professional install them for you as they are not difficult to install. You will simply need to make sure that you do so carefully so that you do not have any leaks.

Considerations

These types of lights can be very dangerous if they happen to shatter. If you breathe in any xenon gas, then this can cause you to go into an anesthetic state. This type of gas cannot be contained inside of any container that is plastic. This will cause the gas to leak out slowly. This is why these headlights are most often made from glass. Something else that you should consider is the price. Because it takes up so much time for just one xenon light to be made, then they tend to cost more than a regular headlight. While they are not typically a lot more expensive, you should still expect to pay more than you normally would.

A Look at Some Common Cooling System Failures

A Look at Some Common Cooling System Failures

By Ron Haugen

Your cooling system is very important to the proper function of your engine. It helps to make sure that the engine will be able to run properly at any given time. It also helps to make sure that the engine simply does not catch on fire. With such an important system, it would seem that we would have a better idea of how it works. Still, the majority of people do not understand the system. This means they do not understand what they can be doing to make sure that the cooling system will work properly. The more you know, the longer you will be able to guarantee that you will have a smooth running car.

Check Your Cooling Fluids

The first line of defense for any cooling system is the cooling fluids. One reason for common cooling system failures is because the fluid is not being changed out regularly. While it does not need to be changed out as regularly as the oil, this is one of the essential fluids in your car. You will need to make sure that it is being changed out at least every 10,000 miles. This will help to make sure that the system will continue to work properly when you need it to.

Another of the common cooling system failures as they pertain to the fluid level is simply checking the fluid itself. Make sure that whenever you change the oil that you are checking the levels of the coolant fluid. This is important so that you will be able to make sure that there is enough fluid in the car to keep your system working properly. Simply pop the top on the system when the engine is cool and make sure that you are at the correct level. It is that easy. If you need more fluid, top it off.

DO NOT USE WATER!

Everyone sees the old movies where people pump water into their engine to cool it down. This is one of the common cooling system failures because the engines cannot be cooled by water anymore. The engines run hotter and will burn right through the water if you put it into your system. This is why you will need to make sure that you are using the right coolant for your car system. This is intensely important so that your system will not simply lock up. The system running too hot will cause many different problems in your car.

Check Your Belts

Another of the common cooling system failures is that you might have a problem with a bad serpentine belt. This is a problem because the belt is responsible for running the pumps which will help to distribute the coolant throughout the engine. If the belt breaks or slips you will run into many different problems. This is just one of the reasons why you should always get the belts checked whenever you get an oil change or engine service of any kind.

Why You Want Disc Brakes in Your Car

Why You Want Disc Brakes in Your Car

By Ron Haugen

Many agree that the brakes are the most important safety feature any car has. They can help you to avoid a collision. They can also help you to be able to stay within the law when you approach a stop. In order for your brakes to provide you with the proper safety features they are designed to, you need to have good brakes. Most cars coming of the assembly line these days will only have disc brakes installed in them. This is not because they are cheaper or easier to install. This is because they are superior to any other kinds of brakes which have come before them.

What Makes Disc Brakes Special?

The first thing you need to know about disc brakes is that they are a simplistic design. Basically you have two clamps on either side of a disc and they clamp on the disc to slow down the car. There have been other designs like the drum brakes which use one pad to push on the inside of the wheel in order to get the car to slow down. The reason why the disc brakes are better is because you are getting the stopping power of two pads on each wheel.

The clamps on either side of the disc brakes has the stopping power of one drum brake. This allows you to stop quicker
and with more accuracy. It also helps to avoid the brakes locking because the system overheated or the brakes become stuck. This is one of the main problems with the drum brakes which is why most manufacturers do not use them anymore.

Most importantly, the thing which makes these kinds of brakes special is the fact that they are cheap to fix. You will simply need to keep up with the changing of the brake pads in order to make sure that the system is working properly at any given time.

Changing Your Own Pads

There are many different kinds of repairs you can do on your own to save money or simply to be more in touch with how your car operates. Changing your brake pads for disc brakes is something you can easily do on your own. This is because in essence, all you will have to do is remove the wheel and the old pads. You can then install the new pads and be on your way. It is recommended you get a repair guide if you are looking to do this.

Making Your Pads Last

When you change your brake pads on disc brakes, there are a few different ways in which you can make them last longer. You will simply need to make sure that the pads were installed with the brake grease applied to the pads. This will keep the pads from causing additional wear to the disc itself. You might also want to simply watch the way that you drive. Sudden starts and stops are not good for your car.

The Importance of Serpentine Belts

By Ron Haugen

There are few belts in your car which are more important than serpentine belts. This is the belt which runs in between the alternator, water pump, air pump and a few other devices. It is basically the belt which makes sure that the engine is running exactly the way that it should be running. There are a few different problems that your car can run into if the belt is bad or snaps because it was either not changed properly or it was not a good belt to begin with. This is why it is of the utmost importance that you have a good quality belt in your engine.

Looking for a Good Belt

The first thing you need to figure out is exactly what kind of belt it is your car uses. This is because every belt is a different size. If you but in the wrong belt, you will cause your engine even more problems. Check with your manufacturer guidelines to find out exactly what length belt you will need for your engine. This will help you to get the right belt for your engine rather than taking chances that you will get the right length.

Looking for the Right Brand

This can get tricky because it is not fair to say that one brand of serpentine belts are better than another. This is, however the case. Just looking at which belts last longer, you will see a clear trend in how well one brand performs over another one. You can check through all of the different reviews about the belts you are interested in buying to see exactly which one will be best suited to your car. This is important to do because while you are thinking that a good brand is a good brand. In fact, there are brands which are better suited to one brand of car over another.

Getting it Installed Correctly

Unless you have a lot of specialty engine tools in your home, it is recommended that you allow a professional to install serpentine belts. This is to make sure that the belt is of the right tension and that there is not any problems with the belt slipping later on. Best of all, when you go through a repair center they will guarantee their work. This way if there is a problem which happens right after you get the car fixed, they will be obligated to complete any work to make the problem right for free.

Check the Belt Regularly

Serpentine belts should be checked regularly for wear and tear. This is something you can do yourself if you feel like it. Simply take a look at the belt. If you see any cracks or signs of wearing on the belt, it is an indicator that the belt might need to be replaced. While you can check it as often as you wish, the optimal time to check it is every other oil change to make sure it is not going too long without being checked.

This is possible when you follow a few pieces of advice. It is your car and you deserve to get what you are paying for when you hire a company to tow your car.

Users Guide to Replacement Convertible Tops

Users Guide to Replacement Convertible Tops

By Ron Haugen

There is nothing like driving down the road in the summer time with the wind blowing through your hair. This is just one of the many reasons why more and more people are turning to convertible cars every year. After a while the top on the convertible has the potential to be ruined by the sun and other factors. This will lead you to need to go out and purchase a new top for your car or go through the process of getting your top patched which will look very unsightly. The problem is, most people are not sure exactly how much it will cost and where they will need to turn to get the top that they need.

The first thing you need to know is that you can get replacement convertible tops. They are produced every day by the same people who produced your original top as well as by companies which specialize in creating the convertible top that you use. If you are unsure about what kind of convertible top you are looking for, you can always contact the dealership to find out from them exactly what the specifications are on the model that you have. This will help you when you order your new top.

The next thing you need to know is where to order convertible tops from. You will need to check a few different sources for this. This is because some manufacturers will specialize in different kinds of tops companies like Robbins Auto Top Company specialize in domestic models, but they have the ability to make tops for any models. You just need to let them know what model you are looking for and what color you are looking for. They will get right to work in creating you a brand new convertible top which you can install on your vehicle.

The next thing you will need to do is to figure out where you can get convertible tops installed at. This is not like getting your oil changed. At this time, you will still have to pay the expense for getting replacement convertible tops. Only now you are also having to pay to get all the water removed from your car so that you will not have to worry about mildew.

The Importance of Antilock Brake Systems

The Importance of Antilock Brake Systems

By Ron Haugen

The modern car comes with many different modern conveniences. These include the ability to have antilock brake systems in the car. The importance of the systems lies in the safety features that it provides you the driver. The old systems used to lock on when you stepped on the brakes too hard or if they got too hot. This would cause unsafe driving conditions which would lead you to be involved in an accident you were trying to avoid. This is why most car manufacturers do not use drum brakes anymore. They have too many incidences of causing the brakes to lock up.

Providing Better Stopping Power

The reason why antilock brake systems are so important is because they make it possible for you to stop the car better. The wheels are designed to grip the road. This is what the brakes are supposed to be taking advantage of to slow down the car. When the brakes lock, they will only allow one section of the wheel to be in contact with the road. This will allow the tire to slip on the ground and you will lose all traction causing the car to be able to slide out of control.

When the brakes are able to slow the wheel down rather than locking on, it allows the grip to stay in contact with the ground. The more constant contact the wheel has with the ground, the better your chances are that you will be able to slow down in time to avoid a collision. This is the entire point of the antilock brake systems being installed in every car produced today. They are designed to make sure that you will be safe when you are driving a car no matter what kind of driver you might be.

Stopping Driver Tendencies

The simple fact of the matter is that there are plenty of people out there who will make a point out of stomping on the brakes every chance that they get. This is why the antilock brake systems are so important. They allow you to not be a victim of your own bad driving skills. While it is still important to pump the brakes when you are coming to a stop, it is not the essential safety tip it used to be. This is because the system will pump your brakes for you so that there will be less of a chance of the brakes locking.

Get the System Inspected

The best way to make sure that you will be protected from collision is to get antilock brake systems inspected regularly. This is something which should be done at least every 15,000 miles. While the brake pads should at least be looked at every other oil change, it is a good idea to make sure the whole system gets checked at regular intervals to avoid any kinds of problems in the future. Regular maintenance will avoid the need for costly repairs in the future.

Why People Prefer Diesel Engines

Why People Prefer Diesel Engines

By Ron Haugen

When most people think of diesel engines, they get the wrong impression. They think about billowing black smoke coming out of the back of the car which causes untold problems in the environment. What most people do not realize is that diesel actually burns cleaner than regular gas and has more efficient burning properties than any other kind of engine available. There are quite a few different reasons why people prefer the diesel engine over a regular one. Here are just a few examples.

Better Gas Mileage

These days everyone is looking at the price of gasoline so that they will be able to save money. There is a misconception about diesel gasoline because it costs more at the pump that other kinds. While it is a little more expensive, it is important to remember that the engine actually runs more efficiently than other kinds of engines. This is why you will be able to enjoy three times the gas mileage of a normal engine. While you will pay a little bit more at the pump than you will for normal gasoline, you will end up saving money in the long run because you make less trips to the pump.

This kind of gas mileage comes in vary handy when you are going on long trips. This is exactly why the trucking community uses diesel engines almost exclusively. There is another reason why diesel engines are used by the trucking industry. The engines are better suited to producing steam and hydraulics. These are things which are used all the time in the trucks so that they will be able to power the brakes, steering and many other properties of the engine. This is just one of the many reasons why truck engines are diesel engines.

Cleaner Burning

There are a few different reasons why the diesel engines are cleaner burning than the regular engines. The first reason has to do with the type of fuel itself. This is because the gas is burning at a much higher temperature than normal gasoline does. This eliminates many of the pollutants which the gas can release into the air. The result is that you do not see any black smoke coming from the back of diesel cars anymore. This is in part because of better filtration systems in the car for the exhaust. It is also because of more efficient usage of the fuel itself.

Getting Gas

The most difficulty people with diesel engines run into is finding gas stations which sell the diesel fuel. This is because the industry is still trying to get used to the fact that more car manufacturers are using this type of engine than ever before. At best you will be able to find one pump available at most locations which sell the fuel. This is sure to increase in the future as more car makers turn to this kind of engine. This will happen as more people find the benefits of the diesel engine.

What You Need to Know About Air Bags

What You Need to Know About Air Bags

By Ron Haugen

All cars these days have at least a driver's side air bag. This is an important safety device which will allow you to stay safe in case of a collision. What happens is when you run into something a signal will be issued through your car to the deployment mechanism. It will be deployed through the use of compressed gas. The bag will deploy instantly and will help to keep you from going through the windshield or hitting your head on the steering wheel. There are a few other things you will need to know about them to maintain safety.

Changing Driving Habits

While air bags are designed to keep you safe in case of an accident, there are certain things you should be doing in order to keep yourself safe when you are driving in a car that has air bags, The first thing you need to be aware of is how close you are sitting to the steering wheel. It is designed to inflate to full capacity. It will not make concessions for people that prefer to drive with their chest right up to the steering wheel. If this is the way that you drive, you are likely to come away from the accident with a broken nose at least.

The recommendation of the industry is that when driving cars with air bags that you drive at least an arms distance from the steering wheel. This will leave a significant gap between yourself and the air bag. This way when there is an accident, you will fall into the bag rather than the bag pushing you back from where you are sitting in the seat. If it is a height thing, consider elevating the seat or using a pillow under you so that you will be elevated rather than moving closer to the wheel.

Another thing you should watch out for is the way you grip the wheel. This is because if you are holding the wheel in such a manner where your arm crosses the middle of the steering wheel, you will run the risk of your arm being broken when they are deployed. The old standards of 10 and 2 still apply for more reasons than just making sure that you are keeping both hands on the wheel at the same time.

Getting Air Bags Inspected

It is a good idea to get the air bag system inspected from time to time. This is because you do not want for the system to malfunction at any given time. Remember that you do not want to get the system inspected too often of you run the risk of the system malfunctioning as well as the fact that you will spend a lot of money unnecessarily. You should, however get the system check at least every five years if it has not been used. This will make sure that the gas is ready to go and that the bag is still packed correctly.

What You Need to Know About Automotive Air Conditioners

What You Need to Know About Automotive Air Conditioners

By Ron Haugen

The air conditioner is an important amenity for many who drive their cars on a daily basis. While you do not need to have an air conditioner to operate your vehicle, you may need one to do so comfortably.

There are multiple things to consider when thinking about the air conditioner in your vehicle. You need to think about how it can affect your vehicle, and how to best use the air conditioner to get the most out of the extra amenity.

How it Works

The air conditioning system in your vehicle is actually a complicated system. Your vehicle has a small refrigeration system that is only used when you need to cool down your vehicle. Compressed gasses are used to remove the heat from the air in the system, bringing the cooler air to the inside of your vehicle.

Gas

Unfortunately, this system can affect the fuel economy of your vehicle. Your car will see a drop in the miles per gallon ratio when you are operating your air conditioner. The process requires extra energy, and will drop the overall fuel economy of your car. The size of the changes that are seen in your MPG ratio will change based on the way you drive your vehicle (speed, acceleration), and the size of your vehicle. Some studies have shown an MPG drop of over 10% when using the Air Conditioning System.

The weight of the system can also change the fuel economy of your car. When you add weight to a vehicle, you are going to lower the MPG rating of your drive. While the change may be slight and small, the weight of the air conditioning system does lower your MPG rating.

Changes in Technology

Changes in technology have completely changed the world of automotive air conditioners. The new technology has changed air conditioning expectations and abilities.

Drivers can now use climate control to change the air conditioning settings for various parts in the car. While the driver may request a temperature of 72 degrees, the passenger may want a temperature of 68 degrees. The new technology allows you to control different zones and settings for those zones.

The air conditioning system has also evolved to include the seats of the vehicle. Certain vehicle models actually feature air-conditioned seats. The seats feature small holes that connect with the AC system, giving you cool air to cool down your back as you drive.

Automotive air conditioners can be one of the best extras to put into a vehicle, as it will help to keep your vehicle at a comfortable temperature as you drive. These air conditioners can also be an energy sapping source, however, using extra fuel to cool your car.

By understanding these various aspects of air conditioners, you can better understand how to use them. You will be able to understand how to get the most out of your air conditioner for the smallest amount of gas possible.

5 Tips For Driving in the Rain

5 Tips For Driving in the Rain

By Ron Haugen

Most drivers will be forced to drive through a serious rainstorm at least once a year. These drivers will be putting themselves at risk as they drive through pouring rain. This rain can easily make the roads slick and hard to navigate, making the average drive slightly more dangerous than usual.

If you find that you need to drive through the rain, you need to make sure that you are both educated and prepared. These 5 tips for driving in the rain will help you to navigate the wet, slick roads as quickly and safely as possible.

Slow Down

The first thing to remember when faced with rain on the road is to watch for road conditions. The rain will make the road wet, which can easily make the road slippery and unsafe. If you are faced with this rain, force yourself to drive under the speed limit. Those who choose to scale back their speed will find that they have more directional stability and control when driving through the rain.

Use the Appropriate Lights

If you find yourself driving in the rain, you need to play around with the different lights in your car. In some situations, your visibility will be at its best when you utilize your fog lights. In other situations, you may need your "brights" to see the road and coming surroundings as clearly as possible. Test out your different lights to give yourself the best visibility possible.

Take Turns Slowly and as Wide as Possible

While you may find that the road conditions are safe at normal speeds on a straight piece of road, the same may not be said for the curves on that road. If you are driving in rain be sure to slow down as you approach and perform a turn. This will prevent your car from sliding during the turn.

Rain Repellent and Windshield Wipers

If you know that you are going to be driving in rainy weather, be sure to prepare your vehicle for the drive. Use a rain-repellent on your windshield, as it will help to remove the rain from your view. You should also be sure to keep your windshield wiper fluid full, as this can help you to clear any dirt that may come from the wet road conditions.

Know When to Pull Over

While a normal rainstorm may not be too much to drive into, a violent storm may be. If you feel that your visibility is too low, or that the road conditions are too poor, pull over. Knowing when to pull over can easily keep you from a potential accident.

If you are planning on driving in the rain, you need to stay focused. You need to keep these tips in mind at all times to ensure that you will be as safe as possible on the road. These tips will help you to avoid many of the possible issues faced by those driving in the rain. The slower you go, and the more you do to enhance your visibility, the safer you will be.

What You Need to Know About Rack & Pinion Steering

What You Need to Know About Rack & Pinion Steering

By Ron Haugen

The Rack and Pinion system is the system that most vehicles use to actually steer the vehicle. The system allows for directional steering, allowing the driver to maneuver as they need while driving their vehicle.

Problems with the Rack and Pinion steering system can cause serious issues with your vehicle. While some will find that the steering becomes difficult and unnatural, others will find that they simply cannot steer properly.

If you operate your own vehicle, you need to fully understand the simple Rack and Pinion system. When you understand how the system works, you may be able to quickly identify any problems that you have with the steering of your vehicle.

What is the Rack and Pinion?

The Rack & Pinion system is actually a simple system that only uses a few different gears to control the direction of the vehicle. The Pinion is the part of the system that is connected to the steering shaft. As you turn your steering wheel, the pinion rotates. This rotation occurs in the grooves of the rack, forcing the rack to move in either direction (depending on the directional change of the steering wheel).

The Rack of the Rack & Pinion system is attached to a tie rod. This tie rod connects the system to the tires, as the tie rod is connected to the steering arm that is connected to the tire. When you turn your wheel, the tie rod moves to direct the tires in the direction of the turn.

How It Affects your Driving

If you have driven different vehicles, you have probably noticed the differences in the feel of the steering of the cars. While some vehicles turn with ease, others require more work to turn. This is due to the torque that is had through the Rack & Pinion system. The more torque you have, the easier it is for you to move the tires. Older vehicles, or vehicles with Rack & Pinion issues, are harder to turn because the system does not move as efficiently as it used to.

Power Steering

Power steering is an important part of the Rack & Pinion system in all vehicles. All vehicles come with power steering because of the difficulty of actually driving the vehicle under non-power circumstances. It would be difficult to move the wheel enough to move the tires if you do not have the power steering, as the vehicle weighs too much to move quickly under simple man-power. The power steering system actually give a hydraulic boost to your actions, making it simple and easy for you to turn the wheels of your vehicle with the Rack & Pinion System.

The Rack & Pinion system is actually an incredibly simple system that allows you to turn your tires in both directions. If you are having trouble steering your vehicle, you can be sure that the problem lies within this simple system. This makes issues easy to identify and fix, getting your car into proper working condition quickly and easily.

If the vehicle will not start, even after a jump, you may be looking at a larger group of problems that may extend beyond it.

Battery Problems

There are multiple problems that can be had with them. While some of these problems are small and easy to fix, others may require a new one.

Some of the most common problems come from freezing or large discharges. If it is frozen, then it cannot operate properly and must be brought to an operable, non-freezing temperature. If a car battery has a large discharge (generally from leaving the car lights on for too long), it is too depleted to operate. A simple jump can help to re-charge it.

More serious problems include loose parts and corrosion. When a battery corrodes too much, the battery will no longer operate. If the battery has loose parts (a loose belt or clamp), it will fail to operate correctly. While loose parts only require a small tune-up, a corroded battery often requires a replacement.

You May Need a New One

It is important for many to realize that they may need to replace their battery. While many look to fix it that they have, they will only waste money with these short-term fixes. Talk to a professional to fully understand the state of your battery, and to understand whether or not you need a replacement.
